Wipe Out the Sewer Monsters - Drip Feed Podcast
What is really lurking beneath our streets, and what can we all do to stop feeding the sewer monsters?
In this Halloween episode of Drip Feed, host Georgie Reid is joined by Catherine Gemmell from the Marine Conservation Society and Scottish Water’s Ross Graham. Together, they follow the journey from toilet and kitchen sink to sewer network, treatment works and Scotland’s beaches and seas.
Hear about some of the strangest things found underground, including a fully inflated space hopper and a manhole packed with bread baskets. Watch a simple experiment show why toilet paper breaks down but a wet wipe stays intact. And discover how fats, oils and grease cool, congeal and combine with wipes to create hard, damaging fatbergs.
The takeaway is simple: only flush the 3Ps, put every wipe and other bathroom waste in the bin, and keep fats, oils and grease out of sinks and drains.
Watch to the end for practical steps you can take at home. If the episode makes you think differently about what goes down the toilet or sink, share it with someone else and subscribe for more water talk straight from the source.
